Human Resources Manager

Organization Summary

At the forefront of building the nation’s labor movement, 32BJ SEIU is changing the narrative around important social and economic issues facing working families. Founded in 1934, 32BJ is the largest union of property service workers in the nation. We have a powerful and important mission: To build and grow a diverse, effective, politically independent and democratic organization of workers to change our lives for the better, improve our communities, and build a more just society for present and future generations.

With a commitment to building power for low-wage workers, 32BJ is engaged in winning strong contracts for members, organizing workers, supporting progressive candidates for elected office and moving a broad policy agenda, such as paid sick days, expanding access to health care, and the Fight for $15.

The union has approximately 425 staff in sixteen offices from Boston to Miami. 32BJ SEIU represents over 175,000 property service workers including janitors, security officers, airport workers, and food service employees in 11 states and Washington, D.C. 32BJ is an affiliate of SEIU, the Service Employees International Union, which has 2 million members dedicated to raising industry standards and making life better for all working families and communities.

32BJ SEIU’s headquarters are in New York City.

Duties & Responsibilities

The HR Manager (“the Manager”) is part of a three-person HR team that administers HR programs and activities for staff across the union’s jurisdiction. Each member of the HR team is responsible for personnel policies and compliance, meeting department goals, and ongoing process improvement. Each member is focused on key functional areas for which they are accountable.

Reporting to the Director of Human Resources, the Manager spends roughly 70 percent of their time focused on hiring and onboarding. Specific areas include:

  • Recruiting and Hiring – The Manager partners with hiring managers across districts and departments, to develop quality applicant pools and provide HR support for screening, selection and hiring. The Manager advertises vacancies and works with hiring managers to coordinate outreach recruiting. The Manager is expected to learn what skills, talent, and experience are required for positions throughout the Union. They will drive the creation of postings and other recruiting material.
  • On-Boarding – The Manager coordinates and refines the on-boarding experience to ensure that all new staff are properly introduced to 32BJ, to its work culture, and to internal resources and tools required to be successful. This begins with our letter of employment, and includes coordinating quarterly group orientations, and formalizing an individual orientation experience.
  • In 2022, 32BJ is migrating to a new HR data system which will introduce an onboarding module for new hire processing. The Manager will be responsible for overseeing processing and supporting other users of the system.
  • Salary Administration – The Manager is responsible for the administration of established compensation practices and periodic salary reporting and analysis.
  • Other duties include, but are not limited to, employment verifications, and weekly collection of payroll data through the HR system. Additional responsibilities will be added over time.
