New Yorkers Demand the White House Extend TPS outside UN General Assembly

435,000 people around the country at risk of losing status to live and work legally in the US

New York – New Yorkers affected by Temporary Protected Status, allies and elected officials will rally today to ask the Trump Administration for an extension of the legal permit to live and work in the United States as representatives of countries from around the world meet for the United Nations General Assembly.

The Trump Administration has indicated that it is planning to end the program which would affect an estimated 435,000 people from ten countries, including El Salvador, Haiti and Nepal. Temporary Protected Status (TPS) protects people from countries in the midst of natural disasters or civil war until they are able to return home and grants them legal permission to live and work in the US. Many people have lived in the US for decades under this status, working, buying homes, raising families and starting businesses.
