-Congressman Bob Brady, SEIU President Mary Kay Henry and 32BJ President Hector Figueroa to join rally and march-
Philadelphia– On Saturday at 10:30am, Congressman Bob Brady, SEIU International President Mary Kay Henry and 32BJ SEIU President Hector Figueroa will join 400+ members of 32BJ SEIU to rally for $15 an hour for Philadelphia security officers and to kick off a massive voter mobilization effort.
Philadelphia security officers, officer cleaners, school district workers, health care workers and more will join 10,000 SEIU members nationwide to get out the vote for Hillary Clinton, Katie McGinty and other candidates who have supported the fight for $15.
The security officers who protect Philadelphia’s commercial buildings, hospitals, universities and more are fighting for $15 an hour. Despite regularly putting life and limb on the line to protect the public, the average security officer starts at just $10.25 an hour. Prior to the officers’ first-ever union contract signed in 2013, officers were paid as little as $8.00 an hour and most lacked health care and other benefits.
Security officers have joined airport workers, homecare and healthcare workers, adjuncts and more in fighting for $15 to better support themselves and their families. Nearing its fourth year, the Fight for $15 has taken center stage in the election with Democratic candidates up and down the ballot declaring their support for the 64 million low-wage workers nationwide who earn less than $15 an hour.
SEIU members and the 64 million underpaid working Americans have taken to the streets to demand something better, and paved the way for one of the most progressive national Democratic Party platforms in our nation’s history. Together, they are a powerful voting block that will be a decisive force in this November’s election and will work to hold politicians accountable once elected.
Following the rally and march, hundreds of 32BJ members will knock on thousands of doors in support of endorsed candidates.
